About
Welcome to the Wisconsin Hockey History website. This site is devoted to the history of Wisconsin hockey at all levels. I am a retired history teacher and a former hockey coach. Since I don’t fish, hunt or golf, I spent the past few years writing books about Wisconsin hockey history. I enjoyed that endeavor but not every item regarding Wisconsin hockey is worthy of a book nor is every story lengthy enough for a book. Hence, this website.
I grew up in Superior, Wisconsin during the 1950s and 1960s. In fact, I did write a book about that wonderful time. “When Grass Was Green and Skies Were Blue” traces the story of high school sports including hockey during those two decades.
My other two books told the story of the Fond du Lac Bears and the Madison Cardinals- two successful senior men’s amateur teams. The fourth book tells the story of the Wausau Vets, another men’s senior team that played during the late 1920s and into the 1960s at a time when Wausau was a hotbed of Wisconsin hockey.
I’ve also written a number of articles on Wisconsin hockey history that I intend to share with this audience as well as articles written by others. Feel free to contribute to this website by submitting your stories to this site.
Presently, there are 111 members in the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. I have provided a link to their website. Not everyone who is deserving of recognition can be inducted into the Hall. For that reason, I plan to include a Wall of Fame on this site with names of those individuals that I’ve encountered who deserve recognition.. Also, please contribute names of others who should be on the Wall of Fame.
I have also provided a link to the Wisconsin born and bred players who have played in the National Hockey League. Check out the impressive list if you haven’t already.
Finally, check back on this website from time to time for historical updates.
Sincerely,
Mike Cowan
