Burt Hable

 

Hable was a successful football coach and history teacher at Madison West High School for over 35 years. He also coached wrestling, softball, and hockey. He was an enthusiastic supporter of all sports, who encouraged his players to be active in other sports.

As an athlete, he earned all-conference honors in basketball and all-state honors in football. His 1948 Bloomer football team was undefeated and untied. Hable was a member of the 1953 University of Wisconsin Rose Bowl team. He led the Big Ten in interceptions in the 1952 season. Hable was inducted into the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996 and the Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Hable coached the Madison West hockey team from 1959–1974. He started the Madison Invitational high school hockey tournament in the mid 1960s that evolved into the WIAA state tournament.
