Jim Webster
Jim Webster coached Madison East hockey from around 1963–1990 (the historical records are incomplete). He was a teacher and football coach at East, as well as the hockey coach.
At first, East competed mainly against the four other Madison schools: Central, West, LaFollette and Memorial. In the late 60s and early 70s, the Madison schools began competing against Minnesota schools.
East was one of the strongest teams in the state during the late 1960s and 1970s. Before the WIAA created the State Tournament, there was the Madison Invitational, held from 1963–1970, which was the de facto State Tournament. Under Coach Webster’s leadership, the Purgolders won the championship in 1965, 1967, and 1968. That was three consecutive times, as the 1966 Invitational was not held. East won four state championships at the WIAA tournaments held in 1973, 1975, 1978, and 1987. They were the runner-up team in 1979. Over-all, Coach Webster had a record of seven championships and one runner-up finish over this time span.
